The Island of Paros: Archilochos

ArchilochoThe villages of Prodromos and Marmara, as well as the seaside settlement of Molos, make up the community Archilochos. Like the village of Kostos, the whole area is mostly agricultural in nature, filled with many orchards that use their own water in order to bear fruit and cows that graze lazily on the grass-filled land. Archilochos also hosts the Union of Farmers' Cooperatives of Paros, which produces hard cheese and Gruyere as their main products.

If you take the road from Lefkes to Marpissa and then turn right, you will find the outside entrance of the Prodromos Village, which is where the Church of Saint Spiridonas is located. Turn left from there, and you will find Marmara not far from Marpissa; this village owes its name to the many strewn marbles of the region. The seventeenth century Church of Taxiarchis will greet you warmly as you visit this marvelous place full of history and tradition.

When beach-hunting at Archilochos, you won't go wrong by trying out Molos. With its clear and shallow waters, Molos is one of Paros's most dazzling beaches. A dirt road from Molos will lead you to Tsoukalia, which is an ideal beach for windsurfing because the infamous Meltemi winds blow there all summer long, just like with the wind conditions of Chrissi Akti and Nea Chrissi Akti.

Just before reaching Molos, make a right turn and end up in Kalogeras, which is yet another out of this world seashore that has a great following among avid tourists and vacationers alike. On one side, there is even a rock which, according the legend, allegedly had a monk commit suicide there. The beach is actually named after him. The hues of the rock are myriad, and it has many layers of stunning and colorful patterns to boot.

Potter's clay is also abundant in this beach, and many visitors go there to get a soothing mud bath that, along with the sun and the sea, is great for the skin. Alas, many people have long ago discovered this beach, and it is no longer a sanctuary for swimmers seeking solitude. On the other hand, its primitive beauty still lives up to the hype even as many beachgoers seek out this unique location.
