by progress and time, the Lefkes Village preserves its
tradition of time-honored natural and architectural attractiveness
with its advantages of being situated inland—right on
Paros's contiguous mountains. Near the end of the nineteenth
century, Lefkes was the center of Iria, which enabled
it to enjoy immense prosperity.
However, a hundred or so years later, many people who lived there for many generations abandoned the village during the 1970s in order to look for work in big city centers like Melissia, Maroussi, and Athens. In fact, many Lefkes people can still be found around those three places. Ironically, during the last decade, people have begun returning to the village because of the booming tourist industry there. It has proved itself to be the perfect place for a holiday destination or even permanent residence exactly because life is so quiet, peaceful, and simple there.
